For the series "CC No. 2 - Craving Coincidence", ausland invited six musicians to curate a 2-day mini festival each. Crossing the lines between the seemingly artificial and what we're used to call the organic, between residuals of worldly sound and cool drafts of thought and contemplation in her own music, Swedish-Finnish composer and sound artist Marja Ahti put together the programme for this very 5th edition. Everybody's invited over for two nights of improvised and composed music, sound art and genre-bending electronic endeavours.

Judith Hamann is a cellist and performer/composer from Narrm/Melbourne. They have "long been recognised as one of Australia’s foremost contemporary-music cellists" (RealTime Arts), and as a composer who "destroys the fiction of the musician who lives and works outside conventional parameters and puts in its place a series of compositions that are fundamentally humane" (WIRE). Their work encompasses performance, improvisation, electro-acoustic composition, site specific generative work, and micro-tonal systems in a process based creative practice.
Judith likes working with and thinking-with other artists such as Marja Ahti, Oren Ambarchi, Joshua Bonnetta, Dennis Cooper, Charles Curtis, the Harmonic Space Orchestra, Sarah Hennies, Yvette Janine Jackson, Alvin Lucier, Éliane Radigue, and La Monte Young. Judith’s work has previously been published by labels including Blank Forms, Black Truffle, Another Timbre, and Longform Editions.
James Rushford is an Australian composer-performer, whose work is drawn from specific concrète, improvised, avant-garde and collagist languages.
He has composed work for BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (Glasgow), Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Neon (Oslo), Speak Percussion (Melbourne), Ensemble Vortex (Geneva), Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne International Arts Festival, Norway Ultima Festival (2011) and Unsound Festival (New York 2014).
As a performer, he performs both as soloist (with the Krakow Sinfonietta, Australian Art Orchestra, Michael Pisaro a.o.) and in collaborations together with partners such as Joe Talia, Golden Fur (with Samuel Dunscombe & Judith Hamann), Ora Clementi (with crys cole), Oren Ambarchi, Klaus Lang, Kassel Jaeger, Anthony Pateras and many more. His music has been published by a heterogenous range of labels around the world.
Niko-Matti Ahti and Topias Tiheäsalo live in Turku, Finland, where they organize concerts, play football and talk about music and various other issues. They have known each other since the beginning of the millennium, but they only started to collaborate as a duo in the year 2018. In their music they bring together recorded sounds, improvisation, concrete acoustical phenomena, speech and loosely composed ideas. Both Ahti and Tiheäsalo have been active in the Finnish music community for the past 20 years or so: their duo is their way to be together with sounds and silences.
Marja Ahti is a Swedish-Finnish composer and sound artist based in Turku, Finland. Ahti works with field recordings and other acoustic sound material combined with synthesizers and electronic feedback in order to find the space where these sounds start to communicate. She makes music that rides on waves of slowly warping harmonies and mutating textures – rough edged, yet precise compositions, rich in detail.
Ahti has presented her music in many different contexts around Europe, in Japan and the United States. She is currently active in the duo Ahti & Ahti with her partner Niko-Matti Ahti and in the artist/organizer collective Himera. Her recent releases comprise "Still Lives" (Students od Decay, 2021) and "The Current Inside" (Hallow Ground, 2020).
