Die gebürtige Schweizerin Charlotte Hug ist eine intermediale Künstlerin, Komponistin, Improvisatorin und Musikerin der Extreme. Ihre innovativen Solo-Performances an markanten Orten haben international für Furore gesorgt. Mit ihren intermedialen Kompositionen, Raumpartituren und Son-Icons (visuelle Klänge) schuf sie ein neues Genre der multidisziplinären Musik und Kunst. Charlotte Hug hat die Viola neu erfunden. Ihre Spezialität als Vokalistin ist die Verschmelzung von Viola und Stimme zu hybriden Klängen. Nach ihrem Studium der bildenden Künste und der klassischen Musik gewann sie diverse Auszeichnungen und Künstler*innenresidenzen in London, Paris, Berlin, Johannesburg, Shanghai. Sie war artiste étoile (Star-Künstlerin) beim Lucerne Festival und nominiert für den Classic:Next - Innovation Award. Charlotte Hug ist Dozentin an der Hochschule Luzern und Leiterin des internationalen Nachdiplomstudiums Creation & Scenario in Music an der Hochschule der Künste Zürich. Hug übt eine rege Konzerttätigkeit als Solistin, Komponistin und Dirigentin ihrer eigenen Werke an den wichtigsten Festivals weltweit aus.
Im Rahmen eines Portrait-Abends der biegungen im ausland tritt Charlotte Hug mit zwei ihrer rennomierten Formationen auf:
Das Duo Lisa Ullén / Nina de Heney hat sich seit Ende der Nuller Jahre als eine der profiliertesten Gruppen der europäischen Improvisationsszene etabliert. Seit dem im Jahr 2015 zusammen mit Charlotte Hug eingespielten Album Quarrtsiluni (ein Begriff der Inuit, der einen Zustand tiefer Stille beschreibt, in dem man zusammensitzt und auf etwas wartet, das aufbrechen soll), spielen sie regelmäßig im gemeinsamen Trio. In diesem treffen drei Hexenmeisterinnen ihres Instrumentes aufeinander, heben ab und atmen die Freiheit.
In klassischer Streichquartettbesetzung erschaffen Phil Wachsmann, John Edwards, Marcio Mattos und Charlotte Hug lebendige, frische Musik – zwischen Mikrotonalität, Dissonanzen, filigraner Leichtigkeit, harmonischen Überlagerungen, Geräusch und Stille. Während es im klassisch-europäischen Streichquartett meist um üppige, zu bewältigende Notenberge geht, herrscht beim Stellari String Quartet also ebenfalls sehr viel Freiheit.
Das Charlotte Hug-Porträt-Konzert findet in Kooperation mit dem exploratorium berlin statt. Am Vorabend des Konzerts, am Freitag, den 1. Dezember 2023, um 20:00 Uhr, ist sie zu Gast bei Mathias Maschat und spricht mit ihm über ihre künstlerische Arbeit und ihre ästhetischen Vorstellungen:

Swiss-born Charlotte Hug is an inter-media artist, composer, improviser and musician of the extreme. Her innovative solo performances in distinctive locations have created an international furore. With her inter-medial compositions, room-scores and Son-Icons (visual sounds) she created a new genre of multidisciplinary music and art. Charlotte Hug has reinvented the viola. Her specialty as a vocalist is a blend of viola and vocals into hybrid sounds. Having completed her studies in fine arts and classical music she won divers awards such as “artist- residencies in London, Paris, Berlin, Johannesburg, Shanghai. She was artiste étoile (star artist) at the world-renown Lucerne Festival and nominated for the Classic:Next - Innovation Award. Charlotte Hug is lecturer at the Lucerne University of Applied Science and Art and head of the international postgraduate studies Creation & Scenario in Music at the Zurich University of the Arts. Charlotte Hug is fully active as a concert performer, soloist, composer and conductor of her own works at major festivals worldwide.

The duo Lisa Ullén / Nina de Heney has since the late 2000s established itself as one of the most distinctive groups within the improvised scene in Europe. Since the album Quarrtsiluni (an Inuit term refering to a state of deep silence in which one sits together and waits until something is ready to burst), recorded together with Charlotte Hug in 2015, they have established a regularly touring trio. As such, three sorceresses converge with their instruments, fly and breathe freedom.
In the outfit of a classical string quartet, Phil Wachsmann, John Edwards, Marcio Mattos and Charlotte Hug create lively, fresh music – between microtonality, dissonance, filigree lightness, harmonic overlays, noise and silence. While in the classical string quartet it is mostly about lush mountains of musical scores that have to be mastered, for the Stellari String Quartet it's all about freedom.
The Charlotte Hug Portrait Concert takes place in cooperation with the exploratorium berlin. On the eve of the concert, Friday, December 1, 2023, at 8:00 p.m., she will be Mathias Maschat's guest and talk with him about her artistic work and aesthetic ideas:
